WIP - Rock Turnaround

on 2024-05-12

Armed with a bit of enthusiasm, I've started taking a Game Asset creation course on CGCookie to learn a few things about 3D modelling. This is a short work in progress from the first step – creating some concept art of several stacked boulders (which will be modelled in Blender in upcoming lessons.)

It was quite fun to follow the step-by-step approach to making this modular boulder arrangement. I began with a few reference sketches until I found a shape I was somewhat happy with. I tried to stick to a distinct outline and bold-ish shapes.

The painting and colour were challenging, but rewarding - working with colour is never really easy and getting it just right takes a little bit of fiddling. I had to stop myself from going overboard so after several *reworkings* I called it done in an effort to not go completely insane. Also, time is quite valuable and whilst I love painting, I wanted to get this done efficiently so that I could focus on the next steps.

This is the first part of a series of courses, so I hope to post another update on how this is going. I'm quite excited to delve into Blender again (last time I did the all-well-known donut tutorial).

What did I learn? Making concept art is incredibly rewarding and it takes a considerable amount of talent and skill to do it beautifully and efficiently. Next time you see some gorgeous concept art out there, be sure to mentally give a few claps to the artist.

'Till next time!
